Weblog: July 2004
Friday, July 23 2004FleepYet another comic strip about a guy trapped in a concrete-encased phone booth with a foreign-language phone book, prodigious grasp of mathematics and physics, and amnesia. Fleep. A Softer WorldA neat photographed (as opposed to drawn) "comic strip," where the text kind of goes with the images: A Softer World. "We bet him five dollars that he would drown./.../A bittersweet victory." Kind of Red Meat-ish. But not really. Wednesday, July 21 2004About Fox NewsMoveon.org is gathering signatures to urge the FTC and Congress to stop Fox News from using the misleading phrase "fair and balanced": "The FTC should prevent Fox News from using the deceptive trademark 'Fair and Balanced.' Fox News is free to present programming in any way it wishes, but the First Amendment does not permit false advertising." Alternet's parent company has filed a legal challenge to Fox's use of "Fair and Balanced" as a trademark: "Fox has actually registered those three words – 'fair and balanced' – as its signature trademark. Does this mean that all journalists and news organizations in the world are legally forbidden to use those words – not only to describe themselves – but for virtually any purpose whatsoever?"
