Adaptation Blog at Susan Orlean's Site

It's no longer being updated, but Charlie Kaufman's blog regarding the movie Adaptation is at Susan Orlean's website. Also at the site: the original article ("Orchid Fever") that inspired the book ("The Orchid Thief") that inspired the movie ("Adaptation").

Dr. Strange on Halloween

It's way past Halloween, and this'll probably appeal mostly to old Marvel Comics fans, but - check out Strange Halloween 2003.

Ladies' Luncheon

Short, sweet story at The Fray: Kathy's Annual Lady's Luncheon, by Beth Lisick.

Tripping the Rift

Funny funny funny "adult" science fiction short. Download the 5-minute movie here or read a little about it at the SciFi Channel, which apparently has picked it up as a series.

Bush in 30 Seconds

MoveOn.org has set up a system to view and rate the entries in their "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest.

A lot of 'em are kinda weak, but hey, if I thought I could do better... best of the 20 I've seen (as in, crams a lot of info in there): Bush Industries.

Good News and Bad News from Iraq

The good news: Saddam Hussein has been captured.

The bad news: he doesn't know where the weapons of mass destruction are, either.

Astronomy Picture of the Day

Nice daily pictures of astronomical phenomena. The Eskimo Nebula, an Antarctic Total Eclipse, a close-up of Saturn.

Bad dating service

Australian farmer spends $320,000 (Australian) with a dating agency to meet a woman. Gets nothin'. Sues.

If his name gets out, I'm guessing he'll either be inundated with offers or never get a date again.

That's Just Wrong

Sites I've only discovered recently that push the boundaries of taste just a bit much. fark.com and Ask Pud. Enjoy.

Bribery Scandal in the House of Representatives

A newspaper article quoting Rep. Nick Smith, Republican from Michigan, as saying fellow Republicans offered to funnel $100,000 to his son's election campaign triggers calls for an investigaton:

"...the attorney general's office will review a letter requesting an investigation from Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a non-partisan legal watchdog group, also wrote Ashcroft demanding an investigation...

Lewis said there was little chance the Justice Department or the House ethics committee would investigate. In the House, Democrats and Republicans have an unspoken agreement not to initiate ethics inquiries, and only a member's request can trigger a committee investigation."

Single and 30+? It's OK

After the spate of panicy articles and books about 30+ single childless women a few months back, we're told it's OK to be single in your 30s.

Homelessness in San Francisco

This past week, the San Francisco Chronicle ran a series of articles on homelessness in San Francisco. 5 articles, focusing on (1) a colony of homeless drug users, (2) a down-on-its-luck homeless family with bright kids in school, (3) a homeless shelter, (4) what we do for the homeless now, and (5) what we (theoretically) should do to get people off the streets.

The series starts out horrifying with the depiction of sick, drugged-out people on "Homeless Island" (pump up the problem):

"Hunched under a ragged blanket on all fours a few feet from the flow of office workers heading home, she dabbed pus off her face, ooze from the dozen scabs that had broken open from ceaseless scratching. Her crack pipe flared; her eyes went wide and bright."

and ends with the promise of salvation:
"There is a way to get chronically homeless people off San Francisco's streets. It will require a sweeping plan - intensive, sustained and expensive."

Various people, including the Coalition on Homlessness, are pissed off about the series:
"They said that while some of the series was positive -- including parts that talked about the need for more supportive housing -- the overall image of homeless people in the stories and photographs was derogatory....
A year of planning and months of work by reporter Kevin Fagan and photographer Brant Ward and others on The Chronicle staff went into the stories, [Chronicle Publisher and President] Falk said. The series, he said, 'put a human face on the issue of homelessness.'"

Homelessness is a major issue in San Francisco, somewhat connected with the high cost of housing; with the dot-com boom and bust a memory (though the high cost of housing can be partly attributed to that, too), it's pretty much the main issue in the mayoral race. Newsom's made it more of an issue, and earlier, than Gonzalez has, but his proposed solutions for the homeless problem have been attacked as both unworkable and unecessarily unkind. For the candidates' positions on the issue, see Newsom's policy brief on homelessness [pdf] and Gonzalez's policy paper on homelessness.

Maybe that's what the naked scene in Pret-a-Porter meant

Just a small paragraph from Regina Barreca's article on why academics dress so poorly:

"Not that the students parade around in gowns and tuxes; they will show up in pajamas and think it peachy. They spend more time worrying about their bodies than what they put on their bodies. Youth these days believe health and beauty to be synonymous, meaning that these baseball-capped and sublimely fit gazelles who sit restless in our classrooms can wear cargo pants and look acutely gorgeous."

If I can't dance I don't want to be in your revolution

An article by Alix Kates Shulman, from 1991, suggests how the quote "If I can't dance I don't want to be in your revolution" may have been falsely attributed to Emma Goldman. It's a story about freedom, feminism, and T-shirts.
