HoT SCI-FI ChiX

In the checkout line at the grocery store yesterday, much to my surprise, I saw Gigi Edgley (Chiana of Farscape) on the cover of TV Guide. Turns out the mag is doing a "Lust in Space" issue - showcasing the sexiest science-fiction show women currently on television. All three of Farscape's female characters make the list of eight; only two women from Star Trek: Voyager make the cut.

FAIR on Media on Upcoming Party Convention Protests

Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting's (FAIR's) latest email issue of Extra! (not online - yet) discusses media anticipation of upcoming protests at the Democratic and Republican conventions. To wit: "the media" is ignoring the facts of what happened at the recent protests in Seattle and DC (against the WTO and World Bank/IMF respectively), portraying the actions there as deliberately violent and anti-police, and predicting both violence and unwarranted anti-cop rhetoric in Philly and LA.
Links from the FAIR missive: ACLU's report on the protest in WTO, criticizing the overzealous police response to the peaceful (and non-peaceful) protesters; R2K Network, a website dedicated to those "planning to demonstrate, educate
and agitate before and during the upcoming Republican National Convention"; and d2kla, for those who plan to protest at the Democratic convention in LA.

Newt Sez Don't Indict Bill

Newt Gingrich says, about the possibility of Clinton being indicted after leaving office: "I can't imagine how it would help America to get in the habit of indicting former politicians." I can't find a link, but some years ago (4?) it was Clinton who denigrated the idea of impeaching Gingrich for violating House ethics rules in connection with his cable TV show "Renewing American Civilization."

Vice President LaDuke

Salon has an interview with Winona LaDuke, Ralph Nader's running mate. "Some of the coverage just refers to me as a Native American woman or a Native American activist. I'm Harvard-educated, I'm an economist by training. I'm an author, a journalist, as well as being active in community development."

Why (some) Women Don't Like (to work in) Silicon Valley

Monika Khushf, director of engineering at Intuit, put out a short documentary about differing levels of satisfaction among male and female engineers in Silicon Valley. According to her interviewees, workplace culture is often geared towards young men without lives outside work.

Over-the-counter birth-control pills?

Because not many people (or orgs) seem to care, regular birth control pills probably won't become available over-the-counter/without a prescription; but "emergency" contraceptives (take within 72 hours after sex to prevent pregnancy) might.

Pissed at the Phone Company?

The FCC is taking complaints through an online form. They'll publish statistics on the most-complained-about companies once they've accumulated enough data.

Foot-Powered Cellphones

Wired says Trevor Baylis (inventor of the wind-up radio) and John Grantham (an engineer) are field-testing two pairs of shoes that will generate enough power to charge a cell-phone battery. If the tech works, you'll be able to charge such small devices without buying electricity from the power company.

Goodbye Computers; Hello Lifestreams

David Gelertner relates a vision of the future of computing/networking/information which many technologists have already thought of (in pieces or as a whole) in terms for the layman.
